Grammar is an important concept for students to learn starting at an early age.  When using grammar fluently, students can be understood correctly by using the correct forms of things such as verbs, nouns and prepositions.  It is also important to instill the importance of proper grammar so that the correct forms of grammar are used within the students' writing.  When students leave the classroom and begins careers in their future it will be important that others working with them are able to read what they have written and be able to clearly understand what they are trying to say. Below you will find many beneficial websites, videos, and other useful materials to encourage your students to use grammatical correct language when writing or speaking.

  • Presentations has many useful PowerPoint’s that open in a window right on the website's screen.  The PowerPoint that is focused on in this link is called Annabelle Analyzes Proper and Common Nouns and it focuses on the usage Common and Proper Nouns. It covers all of the key components of Common and Proper Nouns and even has slides that allow the students to practice what they have learned.

 

  • Grammar Bytes has various exercises students can work through in order to find sentence fragments.  How it works is that the students click start here and it takes them to a passage in which they are to find the sentence fragment.  When they have found the fragment they click on it and if they are right, it takes them to the next passage where they continue the same process of selecting the correct sentence fragment. This allows students interactive practice of what they know about sentence fragments.

 

  • Grammar Ninja is an online game students can play to practice their grammar skills.  There are three different levels that the students can work through those being: Beginner Ninja, Skilled Ninja and Master Ninja.  Each level focuses on different grammar concepts with each level increasing in difficulty. 

 

  • Sheppard Software has a variety of fun games for students to use to help them practice their grammar skills.  The link will take you to a game called Verbs in Space.  In this game, the students have to hit the alien that has a verb on its stomach with their lazar gun.  The game keeps a running tally of how many questions the students have gotten correct and how many they have gotten wrong.  The other grammar games on this website are located on the left side of the page.  You simply click the game title your students are interested and playing and that game will pop up.

 

  • Grammarman Comics gives students the opportunity to learn to basics of grammar through fun comic book stories.  Each story can either be read in comic book form, where you can choose to have the comic read to you, or you can watch the video version of the comic.  The link takes you to the first Grammarman comic, but to view the videos of other Grammarman comics you click the comics hand icon in the top left of the page.  From there you can choose to view the written version of each comic or click watch movie to watch the animated video of the comic.

 

  • Vowel Team has a great video that helps students understand the concept of vowels.  This video covers the idea of when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking.  Remembering this rule will help students when they are learning how to pronounce words that have side-by-side vowels. 

 

  • Scholastic has an abundance of useful resources to use when teaching students grammar.  This link will take you to a printable resource that lists all of the various parts of speech, as well as, examples of each.  This sheet would be beneficial for both students and teachers alike.  A great way to use this in the classroom would be to give each student a copy of the sheet to use as a reference when they are having trouble identifying a part of speech. 

 

  • ESLjokes has joke pages for a variety of grammar lessons.  Each grammar section begins with a joke and is followed by examples of that type of grammar and even various practice exercises.  This link will take you to the possessive adjectives and pronouns section, but to find other categories you simply click the content link at the top of the page.  Grade levels separate each lesson so it is easy to quickly find a lesson that would work for your students.  This would be a great resource to use whole group since you could quickly assess your students' understanding by how they answer the review questions provided.
